About the Department
‘Trend’, ‘Vogue’, ‘Fashion’, by whatever word you call it, is one word which has people behind it and has a telling effect on the word ‘era’ as far as clothing and grooming is concerned. Understandably, the Department of Fashion Technology was constituted in the year 2002 and is the first in the country to offer B.Tech. Fashion Technology programme and Ph.D. programme under Anna University Chennai. The objective of the department is to equip the students with core competencies and skills in Clothing Technology and Fashion and hone them as competent professionals for the Apparel and Fashion Industry.

“What you wear is how you present yourself to the world, especially today, when human contacts are so quick. Fashion is instant language” said Miuccia Prada, the Head Designer of Prada, the Italian Fashion Brand. Fashion is ever changing but style is largely influenced by culture, tradition, beliefs and sometimes even the ambience and environment we thrive in. Fashion can largely mean many things to different people. Fashion Technology is not just about creating high-fashion for the red carpet but can also has other facets such as that explores science and technology for the development of high-performance apparels that meet diversified end uses yet mindful about sustainability aspects.
In the era of fast fashion where cheap clothing is rapidly sold out to meet the trend of times, there is a call across the globe to adopt sustainable fashion or eco fashion and/or engage in circular processing thereby avoiding dump of waste as landfills. The process of making clothing has several back processes and preparatory methods that cannot be completely altered instantly in order to achieve sustainability in fashion. However, by taking slow and steady steps towards minimising use of conventional materials and by inception of concepts such conscious fashion may help in achieving sustainability in fashion. We believe that our efforts and initiatives, if not largely, will positively impact human welfare and the save the planet we live in!

Dr. R. Priyadarshini
Assistant Professor III & HoD
I am passionate about teaching and developed interest for research after my post-graduation. I have over 5 years of teaching experience and about 3 years of research experience abroad. Published 14 peer reviewed research articles in reputed journals and also presented talks in several international conferences. I can speak, read, and write German Language. I have recently developed a flair for calligraphy. In KCT, I teach textile and management related subjects for undergraduate and post graduate students of fashion technology and have also developed interest for fashion design. Besides teaching, I had the opportunity to work in the KCT Office for International Relations which has broadened my perspective of international education and the possibilities for students to integrate with a foreign institution at a very early stage of college education. Also, I have worked in introducing and promoting Japanese and German Language course for our students which will enrich their profile and fetch them career opportunities from overseas. In recent times, I am working on ways and means by which the gap between academia and industry can be bridged, essentially through sensitizing the students on the various industrial practices, software used and effectively handling manpower at the shop floor with the right attitude and conduct. I pay more attention to understand the interest/passion of students and help them to achieve their goals. I help students to introspect and to be mindful while decision making and encourage them to practice it going forward in life. Passionate students require a right dose of encouragement to keep them advancing in life and career, and I make sure to assist them through my best possible efforts.
Dr. G. Ramakrishnan
Professor
32 years of experience that includes 12 years in industry and 20 years in academics. Recipient of GOLD MEDAL for securing FIRST RANK in Anna University PG Degree Examinations in the year 2004. Completed my doctoral degree (Ph D in Textile Technology) from Anna University, Chennai during2010. Published. 41 papers in International peer reviewed journals l and 25 papers in National Journals. Co-authored an International monograph TEXTILE PROGRESS published by the TEXTILE INSTITUE, UK. Co-authored a book titled “CONTROL SYSTEM IN TEXTILE MACHINES” published by Wood head publishers and a book on “Natural Fiber Composites: Manufacturing, Characterization and Testing” published by CRC press.
Presented 45 papers n National/International conferences. Organized 2 International Textile conferences jointly with Texas Tech University, USA and coordinated many national level seminars/workshops and conferences.
Coordinated to set up the prestigious TIFAC CENTEROF RELEVANCE AND EXCELLENCE project in Textile Technology and Machinery, the first of its kind in India, funded by Department of Science and Technology, Government of India
Approved supervisor to guide research scholars of Anna University, Chennai and so far 5 research scholars have completed their research and 3 scholars are pursuing Ph.D under my guidance. Reviewer of leading International journals and reviewed more than 60 research papers.
Co-investigator of a DST-WTI sponsored research project titled on “Complete removal of recalcitrant synthetic dyes from textile wash liquor using organic solvents in multistage centrifugal extractors”. The sanctioned fund for the project is Rs 24 lakhs and successfully completed. Co-investigator of DST-DDP project on “Design and Development of Electronic Knittability Tester”. Received a grant of Rs 25.53 Lakhs from DST. The project is under progress. As Principal investigator received approval for DST-SEED project on Enhancing Livelihood of Handloom Weavers Samathur, Pollachi worth 15,65,200/. Heading Natural Fibre Research Canter, KCT and centre for Weavers at KCT.
Received the Best Societal Innovation Award from National Research Development Corporation, Govt of India in the year 2019.
Dr. G. RajKumar
Associate Professor
He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Fashion Technology at Kumaraguru College of Technology where he has been a faculty member since 2003. He has an extensive 20 years career in teaching and research. He has distinguished record of publications in academic and research journals. His research interests lie in the area of fibre reinforced composites, technical textiles, fabric comfort and functional finishes.
Dr. V. Krishnaveni

I am Dr. V.KRISHNAVENI, have been working in the Department of Fashion Technology, Kumaraguru College of Technology from 01-04-2004. I have 16 years 3 months of teaching experience in KCT, 2 years in other Institution and 7 months of industrial experience (Totally 17 Years 7 months experience). I have completed my Ph.D (Doctor of Philosophy) in December 2012 and got the Guide ship approval and also guiding the two Ph.D research scholars. I have published chapters in book in the reputed Wood head & Springer publications and many impact factor refereed publications in reputed journals and also quality paper publications in the national and international conferences. I am very much involved in several department portfolios and college level activities, I- STEP and I STEM international conferences as a co -coordinator during my tenure. I have produced 100% results in most of the subjects handled and effectively co-ordinated many events (National and International) that have been conducted in the department and college.
I have been engaged Consultancy Government Sponsored Outreach training programmes and the grant received to the tune of Rs 25 lakhs and also organized 26- Skill oriented training programmes for children, women, men sponsored by government agencies like Tamilnadu Corporation for Development of Women Ltd (TNCDW), Mahalir Thittam and Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS), Government of Tamil Nadu. I have acknowledged by the awards of BEST FACULTY AWARD by Management of Kumaraguru College of Technology, Coimbatore on September 2014 and also BEST CITIZEN OF INDIA GOLD MEDAL AWARD for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Education and Research by Global Economic Progress and Research Association(GEPRA),New Delhi on May 2015.

An industrious personality with flair for articulation. His industry experience accounts to 9 years and six months across industry verticals starting from fiber testing to product development of fashion. Academic experience spans 7 years 9 months and counting. His expertise refers to the Area of Stretch Pattern making in which he holds PhD and published several papers. His other areas of research and learning pursuit revolves around Trend Analysis and Forecasting using various kinds of tools, Fundamentals of Design & Interventional studies. His Interventional studies on Ethnic textiles, fashion trends, leather products culminated into research papers in conferences and chapters in Springer titles with citations.

Dr. S. Kavitha has been teaching undergraduate and post-graduate students for more than 10 years now. Prior to joining KCT in 2009, She worked in different prestigious industries. She has organized several guest lectures, Seminars, Faculty Development Programmes and Workshops. She has several research papers presented and published in national and international journals and conferences. She was one of the organizing committee member of 2nd International conference FTC 2020 by IIT Delhi to her acclaim. She keeps updating herself with the latest knowledge in her discipline and likes to interact with the students on contemporary issues and topics. Passionate about her work, she sets realistic goals and displays professionalism in her undertakings.

Mr. S. CHANDRAKUMAR is an enterprising and engaging teaching professional who strongly believes in being a facilitator in the teaching and learning process. A Master degree in Industrial Textile Design from Madras university , he is pursuing Ph.D in Product Development with Herbal finishes . He has more than 20 years of teaching and 2 1/2 years of industrial experience. He had presented more than 20 research papers on the National andIinternational conferences. Nine Research articles were published on Scopus and non-Scopus journals. His hobbies are plant cultivation, long driving, photography and listening to music etc.

Ms. P. Pooja

She holds a Postgraduate degree in Fashion Technology (MFT) from the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT)-Bengaluru, and an Undergraduate degree in Fashion Technology. She earned her specialization in Operational Excellence besides core courses such as apparel production, quality, and management. She has 6 months of teaching experience. Her research achievements and activities include a research project under Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology for designing Mosquito Repellent Nightwear for women, a research project for developing Electronic wearable waistcoat for visually impaired people by using Arduino sensor technology (in collaboration with St. Louis Institute for the Deaf and Blind – Adyar Chennai), and a research project in Cutting department by improvising the activities with the use of 2 hand process chart, time study, and ECRS Tools – (Classic Polo Pvt Ltd Tirupur). She has won awards and laurels for taking part in numerous fashion shows by designing and modeling during Under Graduation. She has done a project for craft cluster entitled “Development of Artisan’s attendance monitoring system”. Her hobbies are reading books, sewing, sketching, modeling, dance, yoga, music, travel, and exploring. She is committed to creating a classroom atmosphere that is stimulating and encouraging for students to develop their knowledge and enhance skills vital for a successful career in the fashion and apparel sector.

Centre of Exellence – Lectra Apparel CAD Centre
This centre, promoted in collaboration with M/s. Lectra, France, with a total outlay of about Rs. 9 crores, is equipped with 40 terminals and a digitizer. Lectra software for textile design, apparel pattern drafting and fabric spread planning, speed steps are useful for students’ training and industry consultancy.
KCT – TIFAC CORE
TIFAC Centre of Relevance and Excellence, is sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, for a total outlay of about Rs. 4 crore. This centre houses manufacturing and advanced testing facilities and undertakes research and consultancy projects in liaison with the textile and apparel industry.

Our department have done many research and development activities for Minor projects, Interdisciplinary Projects, Students research projects, International projects.
